RED CROSS WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR (WSI) CERTIFICATION

The Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Course prepares candidates to instruct the Red Cross Swim programs. Candidates focus on strategies to introduce and develop swimming and water safety skills in the Red Cross Swim Preschool, Red Cross Swim Kids, Red Cross Swim @ School, Red Cross Swim @ Camp and Red Cross Swim for Adults & Teens program curriculum. The certification involves 2 parts. Part 1 has 3 components: Orientation & Skills Assessment, Online and In-Water. Part 2 of the course is a stand-alone 3-day classroom and pool component offered after successful completion of Part  1 of WSI.

Prerequisite: 15+ years of age, strokes at a Red Cross level 10 standard and completed either Emergency First Aid or Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross.

Course Fees:
WSI Part 1: $285.00 (fee includes course material for Part 1 & 2)
WSI Part 2: $485.00

Certification: Upon successful completion, candidates are certified for 1 year as a WSI, which allows them to teach Red Cross Swim programs without direct supervision. Complete 3 Water Safety Instructor—Online Professional Development courses within 1 year of WSI expiry date for a 1-year certification extension at no additional fee. WSIs who do not complete these courses, must attend a WSI Recertification Course.

PART 1 – ASSESSMENT/ONLINE/IN-WATER TEACHING

Part 1 of WSI is divided into 3 components:
1) Orientation & Skills Assessment (3-6 hrs, 1-day session)
2) Online (14-20 hrs)
3) In-Water Teaching (8 hrs in-water teaching + assignments correlating to each hour)

After successful completion of Part 1, candidates move on to complete Part 2 in order receive their Water Safety Instructor certification (valid for 1 year).

WSI – ORIENTATIONS & SKILLS ASSESSMENT

Participants who come for the Skills & Orientation Assessment day must bring their Emergency First Aid or Bronze Cross certificate + valid id. The trainer will screen participants’ strokes to ensure they are at Red Cross Swim level 10 standards. Orientation & Skills Assessment may be completed before or after the Online portion of the WSI Course, but both must be completed before moving on to the In-Water Teaching component. WSI – ONLINE COURSE COMPONENT (14-20 hours)

Participants read assigned information and get tested on each section online. Once all the tests are complete and passed, they will see a “completion” page, which needs to be printed and brought to the In-Water Teaching Component and 3-Day Course. WSI – IN-WATER TEACHING COMPONENT (8 hours)

The last component of WSI Part 1 includes teaching experience. Candidates must complete the first two components (Orientation & Skills Assessment and the Online Course Component) before being able to do the In-Water Teaching Component.

Participants must finish a total of 8 hours of teaching Red Cross Swim Preschool and Red Cross Swim Kids classes within 6 months of completing WSI—Online. Teaching experience can be obtained at Aqua Kids (click here to view our swim schedules) or anywhere else where Red Cross Swim is offered. PART 2 – CLASSROOM & POOL COURSE

WSI – 3-DAY CLASSROOM & POOL COURSE (25 hours)

The WSI Classroom & Pool is divided into 9 hours in-class learning and 12 hours in-pool learning. Aqua Kids is currently registering for the WSI 3-Classroom & Pool Course in May and June 2017. See schedule below for details. Dates are subject to enrollment. 

Prerequisites: 15+ years by the last day of WSI – Classroom & Pool, ability to perform Red Cross Swim Kids 10 strokes and skills, and hold one of the following certifications (not required to be current): Red Cross Assistant Lifeguard, Emergency First Aid or Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross. 8 hours completed assisting classes (WSI Part 1).

RED CROSS WSI RE-CERTIFICATION

To ensure all Red Cross Water Safety Instructors are continuously up-to-date with current practices and procedures, WSI instructors are required to upkeep their certification through yearly Online Professional Development Modules (at no additional fee). WSIs who do not complete these modules, must attend a 1-Day WSI Re-Certification Course (2 hours classroom + 3 hours pool). WSIs have up to 3 years to re-certify. Past this 3-year grace period, candidates will be required to complete the 2-Day Splashback course to get re-certified.

Prerequisites: Proof of an expired Red Cross WSI certification.

Course Fees: $175.00

Certification: Upon successful completion, candidates are re-certified for 1 year as a WSI, and are allowed to teach Red Cross Swim programs without direct supervision.

RED CROSS 2-DAY SPLASHBACK COURSE

The purpose of the Splashback Course is to provide expired Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification holders (past their 3-year grace period) with an opportunity to update their WSI certification without having to complete the full Water Safety Instructor Courses. The course objectives are to update the candidate’s knowledge of the Red Cross Swim programs and to evaluate the candidate’s knowledge and skills required to teach and evaluate swimmers in the Red Cross Swim programs.

Prerequisites: Proof of an expired Red Cross WSI certification.

WSI TRANSFER COURSE

The purpose of this course is to provide a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor equivalency course option for experienced swimming instructor certification holders from the LifeSaving Society, Toronto Ultra Swim Program, Sears I Can Swim, or the YMCA program. Candidates upgrade their teaching skills and knowledge, and are evaluated to ensure they are qualified to teach and test swimmers in the Red Cross Swim programs.

Prerequisites: 17+ years, proof of one of the following current certifications: Lifesaving Instructor, Lifesaving Swim Instructor, YMCA Instructor, Sears I Can Swim Teacher or Toronto Ultra Swim Instructor.

LIFESAVING SOCIETY INSTRUCTORS

Aqua Kids offers the following Lifesaving Society Instructor courses: Swim Instructor, Lifesaving Instructor, Emergency First Aid Instructor and Advanced Instructors.
SWIM INSTRUCTORS
The Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor course prepares candidates to teach and evaluate the swimming strokes and related skills found in the Lifesaving Society Swim for Life program. Candidates acquire proven teaching methods, planning skills, and a variety of stroke development drills and correction techniques.

Prerequisites: 16+ years by the end of the course, Bronze Cross or NLS certification (need not be current)

Evaluation & certification: The Swim Instructor Trainer evaluates and certifies Swim Instructor candidates. Certifications remain “current” for 24 months from the certification date.

Candidate recognition: Certification card.

Course length: 20 hr. stand-alone course (40 hr. when combined with a Lifesaving Instructor course).

Course material: Swim Instructor Pac (includes Instructor Notes, Swim for Life Award Guide, Teaching Swim for Life and Lifesaving Images Binder).

Price: $610.00 + Books

Recertification: Instructors remain current by recertifying within 24 months of the last certification date.

LIFESAVING INSTRUCTORS
The Lifesaving Instructor course prepares individuals to organize, plan, teach and evaluate lifesaving and first aid skills and resuscitation techniques in the Society’s lifesaving and first aid awards. Because the Society’s first aid courses are recognized by Ontario’s Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB), the Society complies with WSIB’s request that only “first aid instructors” teach WSIB-approved courses. Successful candidates on the Lifesaving Instructor course receive two certification cards: Lifesaving Instructor and Emergency First Aid Instructor.

Current Lifesaving Instructors are certified to teach Canadian Swim Patrol Program, Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, Wading Pool Attendant, Lifesaving Fitness and Distinction. Lifesaving Instructors evaluate all items and certify candidates in Canadian Swim Patrol, Bronze Star and Lifesaving Fitness. Instructors evaluate some items in Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross and Distinction, but only Examiners may certify candidates in these awards.

Prerequisites: 16+ years by the end of the course, Bronze Cross or NLS certification (need not be current)
Evaluation & certification: The Lifesaving Instructor Trainer evaluates and certifies Lifesaving Instructor candidates. The Lifesaving Society deems its certifications to be “current” for 24 months from the certification date.

Candidate recognition: Certification card and crest.

Course length: Approx. 25 hr. classroom and water time (often 40 hr. when combined with the Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor Course or the instructor course of other agencies).

Course material: Lifesaving Instructor Pac; includes Instructor Notes, Swim Patrol Award Guide, Bronze Medals Award Guide, First Aid Award Guide, Lifesaving Images Binder.

Price: $610.00 + Books

Recertification: Instructors remain current by recertifying within 24 months of the last certification date.

FIRST AID INSTRUCTORS
The Lifesaving Society Standard First Aid Instructor course prepares candidates to teach first aid courses up to and including Standard First Aid and CPR-A, -B, -C. Current Emergency First Aid Instructors are certified to teach and certify candidates in Basic First Aid, Emergency First Aid and CPR-A, -B, -C.

Prerequisites: Standard First Aid, Lifesaving Instructor and Advanced Instructor certifications (need not be current).

Evaluation & certification: First Aid Instructor Trainers teach, evaluate and certify Standard First Aid Instructor candidates. The Lifesaving Society deems its certifications to be “current” for 24 months from the certification date.

Course length: Approx. 12-16 hr. classroom instruction.

Candidate recognition: Certification card.

Course material: First Aid Award Guide, Canadian First Aid Manual and First Aid Instructor Resource CD.

Price: $610.00 + Books

Recertification: Instructors remain current by recertifying within 24 months of the last certification date.

ADVANCED INSTRUCTORS
The Advanced Instructor course provides additional training for instructors who wish to teach the advanced awards such as National Lifeguard, Standard First Aid and Boat Operator Accredited Training. The course covers: principles of planning; teaching adults; methods of presentation; how to use audio-visual aids; running a course including evaluation procedures and guidelines for apprentices.

Prerequisite: Lifesaving Instructor certification.

Evaluation & certification: Instructor Trainers evaluate and certify Advanced Instructor candidates.

Candidate recognition: Certification card.

Course length: Approx. 5-6 hr. classroom time for a stand-alone course. Advanced Instructor courses are often combined with National Lifeguard or First Aid or BOAT Instructor course.
