A Look into the Development of Lifeguard Courses
Where did people learn their lifeguard skills before the creation of lifeguard courses? Aqua Kids Swim School has compiled a brief history of lifeguarding in Ontario.
Before 1964, lifeguard courses were provided by employers. No official certification was developed yet, and although the Lifesaving Society, YMCA, and Canadian Forces offered their own lifeguard courses, they weren’t official yet.
After 1964, the National Lifeguard Service was launched in an effort to provide a standardized certification through recognized lifeguard courses. Employers saw the need for a recognized certification that demanded the same level of proficiency from all applicants. The founding members of this initiative were the Lifesaving Society, the Canadian Red Cross, and the YMCA.
Still, the National Lifeguard Service needed promotion and advertising. In 1973, it became part of the Lifesaving Society Canada in an effort to offer lifeguard courses that were useful and developed the right skillsets. By 1974, the National Lifeguard standard was revised and they published “Alert: Aquatic Supervision in Action.”
Today, the standards for lifeguard courses and certification are revised every five years. This ensures that all lifeguard courses are teaching relevant material that will ensure the safety of all swimmers. The current National Lifeguard Advisory Committee is composed of the Lifesaving Society, YMCA, Canadian Forces, Canadian Parks and Recreation Association, and Physical and Health Education Canada. Together they work hard to provide high quality lifeguard courses for all Canadians.
